New Zealand Tertiary College
New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) aims to empower people to become effective early childhood teachers, who respond to the needs of children and communities, by providing comprehensive and professional programs.
In the 1970s Kindercare, a well-known Auckland early childcare group, was frustrated by the lack of professional training available to those working in the early childhood area. Staff reported that Kindercare workshops and in-house training were better than the professional training offered at the time. In response, Kindercare Learning Centres started Kindercare Early Childhood Teachers College in 1982. In 1997 the name was changed to New Zealand Tertiary College.
NZTC is now one of the pre-eminent providers of qualifications leading to teacher registration in New Zealand. They are committed to providing professional early childhood teacher training programs that reflect their understanding of students’ needs. They have several flexible learning options that allow students to study and work in early childhood centres. Their innovation and forward thinking in the area of distance learning has resulted in almost 80% of their students choosing this flexible mode of study throughout New Zealand. NZTC also offers programs for students without experience in an early childhood centre through its college-based program.
In 2007 NZTC will celebrate its 25th year of providing specialist early childhood teacher education. NZTC is currently developing a specialist early childhood degree, a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Years).
