Te Pū Wānanga o Anamata ranks 11th for Research Tuesday November 27, 2007

Te Pū Wānanga o Anamata has once again had its research programme recognised by the Tertiary Education Commission in the 2007 PBRF assessment of New Zealand tertiary institutes. Of 31 institutes submitting profiles in 2006 to be assessed on research performance, Anamata attained 11th place.  The first eight were the universities, closely followed by one institute of technology, and another fellow PTE.

As a Māori tertiary institute, this was an endorsement of the quality of research in Iwi and Maori issues undertaken by Anamata, which is funded on the basis of their performance.

The Performance Based Research Fund has three elements of judgement:

· reward and encourage the quality of researchers—60 per cent of the fund
· reflect research degree completions—25 per cent of the fund
· reflect external research income—15 per cent of fund

Researchers at Te Pū Wānanga o Anamata have been engaged in research since 2004 in a variety of domains including:

· Māori traditional knowledge and social development;
· Tūhoe language, education and social history;
· Reo Māori and Tikanga;
· Tūhoe traditions and history;
· Raupatu claims for Waitangi Tribunal; and
· Whanau Violence: A Maori conceptual framework.
