The end of 2007 was nostalgic for many at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design as the left their “castle on the hill” where the school has been in for the last 20 years.
Completed in February, Whitecliffe will be relocated to 24 Balfour Road, Parnell (off Gladstone Road); operating on three floors of the modern building, currently shared with Industrial Research. Each studio has high lofty ceilings awash with bright natural light and the spacious facility has meant that Amber House campus, Whitecliffe’s second campus, can also be integrated into the building.
The new site accommodates Postgraduate Studies, Foundation and First Year Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Fashion Design, Photo, Film and Video studios, Lecture Hall, Seminar Rooms, Library and Café. Across the road from Gladstone Park, it is only a short walk for students to the Rose Gardens, Parnell Baths or The Strand.
Originally starting in Parnell in 1983, this return and induction into larger modern premises is a mark of success for Whitecliffe. With these new surroundings they are able to focus on the new opportunities they can facilitate and students are very excited at the prospect of working in closer proximity to other departments and their friends. Their first classes are operating now with the MFA programme and new BFA students will also start on the new premises in February. Whitecliffe will retain Randolph Street Gallery & Studios for Year Two - Four Fine Arts.
There will be an official opening event at the end of the first term, giving staff, students, graduands and friends the chance to view the new site.
