Media Design School (MDS) students Christopher Medley-Pole and Cameron Smith embarked recently on a journey around New
Zealand, taking amazing pictures with the robot they had worked on while studying the MDS Graduate Diploma of Advanced 3D Production. The robot allows a camera to take spherical still images, which can be imported to Maya and accurately mimic light and its reflections.
The robot works by allowing the camera to capture objects and exposure in their environment, catching the true illumination of the environment that is unattainable with just one position. The camera takes overlapping photos in 90 positions (3 - 5 photos in each position). The students are then able to import a model into the environment in Maya and produce a realistic setting and lighting effect.
The pair is on a mission to capture some amazing Kiwi environments using the spherical panorama robot they developed last year. Follow their trip through the country from Queenstown to Auckland and see some incredible pictures of New Zealand: MDS NZ Robot
