The School of Education at Laidlaw College supported an Outdoor Education Week with Wesley Intermediate on 30 March.
Laidlaw College students work with year 7 and 8 intermediate pupils to build individual confidence and earn course credits for their part in the programme. The design of the programme allows for challenging daily activities that are accessible within the Auckland region, to help minimise expenses and the complications of outdoor education camping. Activities included trips to the North Shore, and Mt Wellington, and a visit to The Extreme Edge Rock Climbing Centre. The programme, which had a 100% participation rate, gave many Wesley students the opportunity to travel. Some students who attended the programme had never been more than 5 kms from home.
“There’s no way we can run the outdoor week without the support of Laidlaw College,” says Nigel Davis. “The Laidlaw students make the week happen.” Students from this low decile school said this was the best week of the year.
Laidlaw College students also work on community participation through team building challenges in swimming, rock climbing, Iron Man/Women Challenge, and orienteering amongst others.
