Tony Gray, ITI's deputy chairperson, has been appointed as the CEO of Nelson Marlbourough Institute of Technology. He will take up the role in late October, when he will leave Pacific International Hotel Management School. So, rather than being an ITI takeover, it is really a recognition of the quality managers employed amongst ITI members.
Tony is not the only ITI member to go on to a major role in the public tertiary education sector. John Mote, founding National Principal of Natcoll Design Technology, was Chief Operations Officer at Te Wananga O Aotearoa in the second half of 2006, steering it through a very difficult time. He is currently working as a VSA volunteer in Tokelau, with his wife Jenny.
In a week when some public sector union representatives are disparaging PTEs' contribution to tertiary education, it is helpful to remember all the close relatonships that do exist between public and private providers, and the talented people that support both sectors.
