ITI ITI Newsletter - February 2009

Welcome to the February 2009 edition of the Independent Tertiary Institutions (ITI) newsletter.

The dominant topic these days is the recession - how bad will it be and low long will it last.  The recent Jobs Summit assembled a diverse, talented group of New Zealanders to map out some strategies to mitigate the worst of the global downturn and keep people in work here.  ITI notes the emphasis which has been correctly placed on education, training and skills at the Summit.

In his closing remarks, Prime Minister John Key stressed the importance of educational opportunities and the need for people to have the skills they need to be employable and productive.  He is considering fast-tracking the Government's Youth Guarantee policy which would see school students able to study and train at non-school institutions, including PTEs.  ITI believes the private tertiary sector can make an important difference in this area and we look forward to working with the Government on this issue.

In this newsletter, The Learning Connexion has moved into its new and creative Taita campus but is having to deal with the vexed issue of capital spending in the PTE sector.  Students from the Media Design School are touring New Zealand with their robot creating a photographic record of the country.    Finally, a former Whitecliffe student has landed one of the world's most fashionable and glamourous jobs.
