Local Artist Unveils Symbolic Mural at BTI
February 2011

Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (BTI) welcomed a new intake of primary and early childhood teaching and counselling students in February as part of Te Wiki Whakawaia or Familiarisation Week.  As part of the celebrations, students and staff participated in the unveiling of a symbolic mural designed and painted for BTI by local artist Timo Rannali.

Based on a rural scene, the mural pays homage to the landscape of orchards and vineyards that pre-dated development of the BTI campus, and captures the idea of nurturing growth and health in others through the vocations of teaching and counselling.

In a presentation to students, Timo encouraged them to be passionate about their future work, saying: “To produce a good crop, you need to work with a certain amount of skill and motivation and love.  When you go out teaching and counselling, do it with passion, because that’s going to be the difference between being successful and just doing a job.”

Dr. Andrew Smith, who chairs the Leadership Team at BTI says, “We are really thrilled with what Timo has created.  He has captured the meaning and heart behind what we do beautifully, and the bold colours certainly brighten up the campus!”

BTI’s tagline ‘Growing Great Hearts & Minds’ is featured prominently in the mural and expresses BTI’s commitment to holistic education and the belief that by helping students to develop and growth personally as well as professionally they will be empowered to be agents of positive change in their chosen careers.
