Laidlaw College is a dynamic and vibrant centre of learning committed to training people of influence on behalf of church and society – people who will bring the clarity of grace and wisdom. At Laidlaw College the Gospel story converges with the issues of the world. As one of the South Pacific’s largest tertiary theological institutions, the college offers quality teaching in an inter-denominational, multi-cultural and diverse environment. Laidlaw programmes have a strong academic emphasis combined with practical experience, providing students with truly integrated study options. Students at Laidlaw train to be schoolteachers, counsellors, pastors and workers for Christian organisations. Many students enhance their theological knowledge before returning to a diverse range of occupations and applying the knowledge and skills they have learnt to the workplace.

Laidlaw College was founded in 1922 when Reverend Joseph Kemp established the New Zealand Bible Training Institute in a two-storey house on Auckland's Hopetoun St with an enrolment of nine trainees. In 1961 the College relocated to Henderson, and shortly thereafter became known as the Bible College of New Zealand. Today, Laidlaw College has over 1000 students studying in five schools – education, counselling, theology, mission and ministry, and postgraduate – as well as a Centre for Academic Preparation and Support. Laidlaw College Inspires Christchurch Leaders

Laidlaw College’s Christchurch Leaders' Day held at the Clearwater Resort in September offered leaders in Christchurch stimulating content, great food, and the opportunity to spend time with each other in a comfortable and relaxed environment.

Eighty-four leaders attended this year’s event – probably its broadest cross-section ever. The theme was “Rethinking the Church in the City: Biblical Perspectives on the Role of the Church in the Rebuilding of a Post-Quake City”.

 

Many great seminars were being held in Christchurch post-quake offering practical advice on all kinds of relevant issues. Laidlaw felt it could make a unique contribution by addressing some of the biblical and theological themes that might undergird the church being involved in rebuilding the city.

gave the opening address and spoke about living in the light of hope, reflecting on Christian hope from Romans 5 and 8.

Christchurch Campus Dean of Studies Steve Graham spoke about churches relating to each other using the social trinity as a model for inter-church relationships, and generating mission momentum with a focus on God’s heart for the lost in the city.

Senior Lecturer Alistair Mackenzie spoke from his international research about churches resourcing people for life and ministry. He challenged leaders with the importance of equipping people for the task ahead. He highlighted dynamics that are present in churches that do this well: a theology of work, a theology of mission, a theology of the city and appropriate leadership that was not fearful of this.
