Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design

Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design offers internationally recognised tertiary level programmes ranging from Foundation to Masters, at NQF levels 4-9. The four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) programme offers majors in fashion design, fine arts, graphic design and photography, film and video. There are Masters qualifications in arts management, arts therapy, arts therapy (clinical) and fine arts. Undergraduate students can successfully exit their programme at the Certificate, Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree level. Whitecliffe operates from two campuses located in central Auckland, with individual studio spaces for BFA students, including one public gallery for exhibiting work by students, faculty and visiting artists.

Low student-lecturer ratios support student-centred learning. The emphasis is on students owning their own work and being able to articulate their purpose and position. Whitecliffe provides a comprehensive grounding in business, marketing and professional ethics, as well as a focus on contextual history, theory and social sciences that influence traditional and contemporary arts and design practice. Official student retention and completion rates are 80+%.

The College was established by Greg and Michele Whitecliffe opening in 1983. Whitecliffe has now positioned itself as an industry leader in contemporary arts and design education.

New Artist-in-Residence Programme at Whitecliffe
December 2011
The Whitecliffe School of Arts and Design is pleased to announce the S-AIR Award 2012 Residency. This residency has been established to provide international artists with the opportunity to work within the Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design campus and travel in New Zealand for a period of 8-10 weeks from January-March 2012.

The purpose is to support ambitious and experimental projects and the production of new works. Visiting artists are encouraged to make links with New Zealand artists and arts organisations in order to promote an exchange of ideas and practice between Japan and New Zealand. The selected artist will be chosen by a panel of lecturers from Whitecliffe School of Arts and Design from a selection of artists supplied by S-AIR. The successful applicant will be announced on December 23rd 2011.

About NPO S-AIR
NPO S-AIR was set in 1999 as an organisation that runs artist-in-residence programmes in Hokkaido. The Agency for Cultural Affairs was initially the primary funder for the organisation. In 2004, S-AIR was registered as a NPO (Non Profit Organisation) and since then, the programmes have been run by S-AIR and Inter Cross Creative Centre, ICC (run by Sapporo Electronics and Industries Cultural Foundation). S-AIR has built various links between artists, arts centres and organisations both nationally and internationally. In the past ten years S-AIR has invited 57 international artists from 27 countries to take part.
